You can also just ask if they have a straw. “Hey dude, SITFU.” That means suck it the f- up. Since this is one of the most important duties of recruits at boot camp, senior Marines will often say boots only have the “fire watch ribbon,” a pejorative for the National Defense Service Medal that everyone gets.Īcronym often used in response to someone complaining. While sentries may well have been looking for fires in the past, Marines pulling fire watch nowadays can be walking around a barracks aimlessly or standing their shift behind the machine-gun in Afghanistan. Especially among post-9/11 era infantry Marines however, you are pretty much a “boot” until you’ve been to combat. The term’s origin apparently comes from Vietnam, as an acronym meaning “beginning of one’s tour.” New Marines joining a unit are usually referred to as “boots” until they go on a deployment or have at least a year or two in the Corps. Photo: Life is like a box of Chocolates BootĪ pejorative term for a new Marine fresh out of boot camp. Instead of “oohrah,” Marines will often just say “yut” when in the presence of motivational speeches and/or talk of blowing things up.Ī play on the Marine Corps motto of “Semper Fidelis (Latin for “Always Faithful”), Semper Gumby for Marines means “Always Flexible.” This phrase is often used when you are told to do one thing, then told a different thing, then told to just stand by, then told to go back to doing the original thing. Your platoon sergeant may ask if everyone understands the plan of the day, to which everyone will respond with “Errrr.” Translation: Yeah Gunny, we got it.Īrguably used more often than “Oohrah” by junior Marines to express enthusiasm. This is an even more shortened-down version of “rah.” But it’s most often used as a lazy-man’s version of agreement. It’s like the Marine version of the mobster’s “fuggaddaboutit.” You could be agreeing with someone, by saying “rah.” You could be excited about going on a mission by exclaiming, “Rah!” Or you could be asking the platoon if everyone understands, “rah?” Short for “Oohrah,” a Marine greeting or expression of enthusiasm similar to the Army’s “Hooah” or the Navy’s “Hooyah.” Rah, however, is a bit more versatile. If you are around Marines long enough, you’ll hear someone being called a “boot” or dozens of them screaming out “yut.” While everyone in the Corps speaks and uses English most of the time, there’s another layer of terminology added on top which is uniquely Marine. Marines speak a slightly-different language than the rest of the United States. You may take some time to understand the poetry, but once you do, you will never forget it. It is a good read and a glance into his personality. It is a comforting piece that you can read anytime you want to. It is a detailed and narrative poem that one would thoroughly enjoy. Being a maestro of Romanticism, Wordsworth created wonders in this piece. Published in 1814 ‘The Excursion’ was focused on revolution and romanticism. It is touching yet heart-wrenching at the same time. William takes you on a journey full of realizations and eye-openers. The main purpose of this poem is to make people realize what pure innocence is, of a child unaware of the finality of death. It is brilliantly written and is an emotional piece at heart. It is unbelievable when you look at the content of the poem. William was merely 18 years old when he wrote this poem. You must read it at least once to appreciate the majestic aura of William Wordsworth. It is Pandora's box for the lovers of nature. Do you know the blissfulness of a solitary life? If not, this work is a perfect description of it. If you feel a little lost, this piece will get you back on track and smiling. It has touched the lives of many and offered a new perspective. It is deeply connected with the daffodils and is a eulogy of the powers of nature. And if you haven’t yet, do it after you finish reading this blog. Millions would’ve read it across the globe, across different times. This is the timeless poetry of William Wordsworth. You will find yourself passing it to everyone because you'll find it a perfect creation. It is a bit on the lengthy side, but if you understand the crux of it, you will be charmed by its subtle beauty. It will take a considerable amount of time for you to complete the reading but you will appreciate the poems as you absorb them in your heart. He has curated some brutally honest pieces in the book. The Prelude was published after the death of William and has the finest poems of his life. The book may appear a little intimidating and hard to understand at first, but once you read and reread it, you will be amazed by the beauty of it. But you must know that it is precious and worth a read. The book was written in vernacular language and was an experiment according to the authors. This book contains emotional as well as intellectual poetry. It bookmarked the inception of the Romantic Movement. This book acted as a revolution in the history of Western Literature. Published by Coleridge, this book is an underrated piece. Lyrical Ballads containes William’s first works. Now, let us list out his impeccable works that you need to read today to catch his essence: 1. He poured his heart out and connected with his readers well, becoming a notable gem in the world of English Literature. He felt emotions too strong and that was quite evident in his poems. The Romantic Age of literature was set in motion by him and Coleridge. It can be said that he curated a genre of poetry that never existed before. Wordsworth altered and influenced the lives of millions through his works. Such is the charm of the Wordsworth words. They are relatable and appear fresh even if you read them for the hundredth time. One of his first works was published by Coleridge. It is imprinted in the history that Wordsworth’s meeting with Samuel Coleridge brought a turning point in his career. But time went through and Wordsworth bloomed extraordinarily as a poet, describing everything with sheer beauty, in thought and writing. He started writing as a teenager and did not think of opting for it as a career choice. The inception of romanticism can be linked to the early 1780s and Wordsworth was successful in his experiment with it during that time and is still revered as a true romantic even today. He experienced some major losses at a very tender age, but he rose out of it and created wonders in the field of literature. He was well versed in defining human relationships and also portrayed the flow of emotions between them.īorn on April 7, 1770, William Wordsworth was a genius by brains and a romantic by heart. His works contained romanticism and spirituality in abundance. William Wordsworth can be considered the King of Romanticism in English Literature. f/2.8 is a larger opening than f/8 and a much larger opening than f/22. Smaller f-stop numbers are actually larger openings (larger openings let in more light). It helps that they’re usually written that way. Like shutter speed, think of the f-stop numbers as fractions. That means that f/8 will let in the same amount of light whether you’re using a 50mm lens or a 500mm lens. The important thing about that fact is this: Any given aperture will let in the same amount of light, no matter the focal length of the lens. You probably don’t really care about that at this point. So what in the world do these numbers mean? They’re actually ratios of the lens focal length to the size of the aperture opening. You’ll see the same sort of series on your camera’s LCD readouts. What you see on the aperture ring is a series of numbers like this: 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32. Here’s the sticky part: the F-stop numbers. By turning the aperture ring or making the adjustment on the camera (see your manual), you make the opening bigger or smaller, letting in more or less light. Many modern lenses lack an aperture ring, so the camera must control aperture. It’s adjustable by a ring on the lens or by a dial on the camera, sometimes both. The aperture is the opening in the back of the lens that regulates the amount of light entering the camera. Both of these combine to trip up a lot of people early on so if you can get a grasp on them now, the rest will come much easier. There’s that sequence of funny numbers that seem to work backwards and that little matter of depth of field. This time we’re tackling aperture.Īperture is the one thing that seems to cause the most confusion. Last time we covered what the shutter does and its effect over exposure and the image. The fact that the camera on your phone can go from f/1.8 to f/1.6 isn’t going to drastically improve your photography-only time and effort can do that. The shutter and aperture are the main players in the game of exposure. The iPhone Photography Awards started 13 years ago because people have been shooting awesome photos with smartphones for as long as they’ve been around.
